Using Items that you will find in the cottage
Waste Management
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT WIPES, SANITARY
NAPKINS, DISPOSABLE NAPPIES AND OTHER PLASTIC OR STRONG FIBROUS MATERIALS ARE
NOT FLUSHED DOWN THE TOILET. THE DRAINS IN THE COTTAGE ARE NARROW AND BLOCK
EASILY. PLEASE USE PLASTIC BAGS TO DISPOSE OF THE AFOREMENTIONED.
IF YOU USE BLEACH OTHER THAN THAT WHICH WE SUPPLY
PLEASE ENSURE THAT IT IS SEPTIC TANK
FRIENDLY.
ASHES FROM THE FIRE MAY APPEAR COLD BUT CAN HAVE HOT SPOTS..PLEASE ENSURE THAT
THEY ARE PUT DIRECTLY INTO THE OUTSIDE ASH BIN AND NOT KEPT INDOORS WHEN REMOVED
FROM THE FIRE.
IF YOU ARE ON ONE OF OUR "LEAVE IT AS YOU FIND IT" LETTINGS THEN PLEASE BURN
COMBUSTBLE
RUBBISH ON THE FIRE AND
TAKE OTHER RUBBISH HOME TO DISPOSE OF IN YOUR HOME BINS. THE GREEN RUBBISH
LINERS COST US £2.00 + EACH
WHICH IS A CONSIDERABLE PERCENTAGE OF WHAT WE MAKE ON THAT TYPE OF LETTING.
The Log Burning Stove
1/ The Log Burning Stove is one of the most commented features of
the cottage, especially by
those of us who remember making up fires in the years prior to central
heating and
switch on heating. If you have never made up a fire then there are some
guiding principles.
First you need to ensure that the fire is not clogged with ashes. If it
is then then they need
manipulating into the pan at the bottom of the fire using the brass knob
on the side of the fire
and the pan needs emptying into the outside bin MARKED ASHES. NEVER
DISPOSE OF ASHES
INSIDE THE COTTAGE OR THE UNMARKED BIN FOR GENERAL WASTE
BECAUSE EVEN ASHES THAT SEEM COLD MAY STILL HAVE HOT SPOTS THAT COULD
SET FIRE TO THE BIN AND SUBSEQUENTLY POSSIBLY THE COTTAGE!
2/ Screw old newspapers up into loose balls or make "twists" by
rolling them into loose
sausage shapes. put them into the base of the fire.
3/ Put big logs at the side of the fire and a 5 cm square
firelighter piece between the logs
and on top of the paper balls and/or twists.
4/ Put small logs or kindling across the logs horizontally, making
a bridge that air can freely
get around.
5/ Open the bottom vents and close the side butterfly valves so
that air is getting in the bottom
and smoke is not exiting the top butterflies (which are used to "air
clean" the glass when
the fire is properly alight and not smoking so Much).
6/ Light the newspaper and close the fire door.
7/ If the fire does not light the most common reason is that the
fire has been too tightly
packed stopping air flow or the wood is damp or not enough firelighter
was used to get
the heat up.
8/ When the fire is going well and is glowing rather than smoking,
open the side butterfly
vents to clean the glass frontage of soot.
